Screen tiles do not appear automatically

Each time I start the computer is is necessary for me to adjust the screen resolution to cause the screen tiles to appear when clicking "start" on the right side of the screen. What am I not doing? When I open the computer the next time I adjust the screen resolution back to a different setting and the tiles come up. Also (I'm obviously a newcomer to W. 8), I get a dialogue box each time...
